Capturing accurate details about underwater structures and environments represents a growing field of scientific endeavor. The capability to turn data into insight is an opportunity to reconstruct and preserve the past, to answer long-held questions and to bring new marine discoveries to life in digital form.

Deep ocean discoveries
3D at Depth is working with The Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) to measure the ocean floor at resolutions of 1cm. This will enable new deep ocean observations to support MBARI’s benthic ecology and marine geology research programs.

Making time travel possible
In collaboration with ScanLAB and as part of the BBC series Italy’s Invisible Cities, we used LiDAR technology to scan the remains of a city 5m below the surface of a bay in Naples. 3D point clouds were used to reconstruct a Roman aristocrat’s luxury villa and uncover its historical secrets.
Bringing history to life
The Yellowstone National Park was established to preserve land for future generations. As part of this mission, they wanted to document a fleet of rowboats that had been intentionally sunk in the 1950s. By deploying LiDAR in seven scanning positions, we were able to develop a 3D point cloud of one of the boats, despite the murky conditions in the lake.
